Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I continue to accomplish several studies in the field of SURFACE SCIENCE, using Quantum Beam (photons (both X-rays & visible light), ions) and STM as the main tools whose frame is not limited only to synchrotron radiation (SR) or measurement, but extends also to biological materials and fabrications, concerning widely nano-science or nano-technology. My focus is to work to pioneer new interdisciplinary fields.

2) Research Topics

Research AccomplishmentsF basically classified into 3 parts: A) B) C)

A)   Nanoscale Analysis & Control of Surfaces & Interfaces by SR, STM

[SR]  Accurate structural analysis of the buried nanostructures by SR:
I managed to accurately determine the structural analysis of nanostructures at surfaces or interfaces (1991~), which is difficult using conventional methods. Especially, I successfully analyzed for the first time (2003) a self-organized metallic nanowire on Si surface and its "buried" structure under deposited film. Such a "buried" "low dimensional" "extremely dilute" system profited from the advantage of SR. I also worked (1994, 2000~2003) on the installation of beamlines at SR facilities.

[SR + STM]  Development of Synchrotron-Radiation (SR) based STM:
As mentioned above, SR is a quite effective tool, whereas SPM is indispensable tool for surface studies. On the other hand, they are really complementary to each other: SR gives information on Spectroscopy & Spatial structures, but it is merely averaged information. SPM has extremely high spatial resolution, but is weak in the chemical analysis. I devised the "Element-sensitive STM" system, which, although desired by many scientists for a long time, has until now not yet been achieved. Based on a selective core-excitation by monochromated brilliant X-rays, I successfully distinguished the different elements 1) with spatial resolution of 2~4 nm, 2) for different (Si(111)-Ge, Ge(111)-Cu) systems, and 3) for extremely dilute systems (thickness < ~0.3 atomic layer). These results have never been obtained by other groups around the world. This system can also serve for element-sensitive nanoscale fabrication.

[Ion Scattering]  Structural analysis and fabrication of nanostructures on oxide surfaces:
Although oxide serves for various (electronic, optical, chemical) devices, its surfaces, which play an important functional role, are not clear compared with semiconductors, because accurate analysis is difficult due to their insulating property and multi-composition. Thus, by using co-axial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS), I clarified the surface terminating structure of ZrO2 (electrolyte in solid oxide fuel cell) and LiNbO3 ,LiTaO3 (materials for SAW or piezo devices), as well as the dependence of the interaction of ZrO2 on the deposited electrode metals (2001~2005).

[STM]   The above mentioned "Nanoscale control of structures" is important for Soft Materials, i.e. organic molecules. Thus, our Lab. continued various studies on Nanoscale control of organic molecules using STM. For instance, 1. Organic Nanowire formation using chain polymerization reaction stimulated by STM tip pulse bias, 2. Analysis of the "local photon emission" with high spatial resolution by STM tip stimuli, 3. Independently driven Double-tip STM (Nano-tester), 4. Nano-gap Flat electrode, etc. (to be referred to Lab.'s HP).

B)   Development of X-ray nano-focusing beam and its medical application F
The importance of Elemental Analysis is not only for hard materials that has been mentioned above, but also for soft materials. Thus, after having participated in the development of an optical device (mirror) to focus SR beams at a nanometer scale, I initiated its application in medicine by planning the elemental mapping of a single biological cell. By persuading and combining three groups from different fields (SR, mirror, medical), I spear-headed the successful development of a scanning fluorescence microscope. By comparing normal and cancer cells, an important role of Zn for their anti-drug resistance was revealed (2005). This result has been selected as the "Highlight of the year" in 2005 at SPring-8. Now, the next step researches (other type of biological & medical applications) are under progress, by developing new devices.

C)   Control & Applications of "Structural color" based on the nanostructures of biological surfaces F
The interaction between Photons & Materials (especially, surface) is interesting not only from viewpoint of X-rays, but also of Visible light.
The well known brilliant metallic blue luster of Morpho butterflies is produced from their scales which are composed of an almost transparent protein. The origin of the coloration is then not pigment but an interference effect derived from a microscopic structure. However, the mystery of the lack of multi-coloration (i.e., it appears blue from every angle) remained. I proved that the origin of the coloration is a specific nanostructure, by reproducing an artificial film. Also I developed a method for industrial mass-production of this color. These results have been acclaimed and recognized with an international prize by a European foundation (L'Oréal, 2004). After that, the importance of the structural coloration has been realized again from various viewpoints. Thus, I continue to develop the studies on wide applications of the structural colors (control of various optical properties, mass-production, wide area, powder formation, etc.).
